Det är sedan länge känt att 2019 blir ett stort år för AMD, som planerar släppa en helt ny uppsättning av produkter på 7 nanometer hos TSMC. Det här tillsammans med arkitektoniska förbättringar på processor- och grafikfronten hoppas bolaget ska ge utdelning när de nya produkterna väl släpps.

På processorfronten handlar det om Zen 2 med familjen Ryzen 3000, där bolaget för första gången sedan lanseringen av Zen gör större ingrepp i arkitekturen. Förutom TSMC:s nya teknik går AMD över till en ny designmetodologi, där själva processorkärnorna tillverkas på 7 nanometer och kopplas samman med en större I/O-krets med bland annat minneskontroller tillverkad på 14 nanometer.

En relaterad nyhet som gäller datacenter och servrar är den nya Epyc-familjen med kodnamnet "Rome", som kombinerar åtta processorkretsar på 7 nanometer. Varje krets huserar 8 kärnor vardera och totalt ger det hela 64 kärnor med 128 trådar per processor. Även här kopplas kretsarna ihop med en I/O-krets, som är ännu större, tillverkad på en äldre tillverkningsteknik.

Den tredje stora nyheten som väntas under året är grafikarkitekturen Navi, som ser ut att bli sista anhalt för Graphics Core Next (GCN). Däremot ser det ut som att GCN får sin största uppdatering hittills, bland annat med inbyggd acceleration för ray tracing. Förutom att användas i Radeon-grafikkort väntas Navi också lägga grund för nästa generations spelkonsoler från Microsoft och Sony.

I ett pressmeddelande skriver organisationen Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), som ligger bakom den årliga teknikmässan Computex i Taiwan, att AMD:s VD Lisa Su är första talare när Computex 2019 slår upp portarna. Ämnet för anförandet är "The Next Generation of High-Performance Computing".

Samtliga av AMD:s kommande produkter på 7 nanometer nämns vid namn och enligt pressmeddelandet ska Lisa Su delge ytterligare detaljer om samtliga; Epyc "Rome", tredje generationens Ryzen och "Navi". Med andra ord mer om Ryzen 3000-serien vars lansering tros äga rum kort efter Computex, men även glimtar av grafikarkitekturen Navi som tros dyka upp senare under året.

Lisa Sus anförande äger rum den 27 maj klockan 10:00 lokal tid i Taiwan och 04:00 i Sverige. Själva mässan går av stapeln dagen efter, den 28 maj, och pågår till och med den 1 juni.

The 2019 COMPUTEX International Press Conference & CEO Keynote is scheduled for Monday, May 27 at 10:00 AM in Room 201 of the Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) in Taipei, Taiwan with the keynote topic "The Next Generation of High-Performance Computing".
